Call for Rug Hooking Artists: Let's Share the Art of Rug Hooking in Rural Georgia

Are you a rug hooking artist looking to share a medium rooted in tradition, creativity, and storytelling?

We’re excited to introduce the beautiful, timeless art of rug hooking to our local rural Georgia community—and we’re looking for artists to submit hooked birds for our Wings of Art Rug Hooking Exhibit in Fall of 2027. This exhibit is sponsored by Anita’s Rug Hooking.

What is rug hooking?

Rug hooking is a traditional fiber art that turns wool and fabric strips into textured, colorful works of art—from practical rugs to detailed wall hangings. This meditative, tactile craft is both relaxing and expressive, offering endless creative possibilities.

Our Inspiration: Birds as Muse

My own rug hooking journey began with a love for birds—their color, grace, and symbolism in rural life. From the cardinal perched on a fence post to the swoop of a hawk over the fields, birds inspire every loop I pull through the backing. Let’s share our love of rug hooking; join us and put your work in the exhibit.

We’re Looking For:

  • Aspiring or experienced rug hooking artists.
  • Rug Hookers looking to build community and preserve a traditional artform
  • All work must be ready to hang or able to be put on a pedestal or shelf. Single hang or gallery finish. No T-pin hanging will be allowed.
  • Label work with the artist's name and the name of the piece will be required.

Let’s bring life, color, and creativity to our community—one bird, one loop, one rug at a time. You will have the option to list your piece for sale with a commission going to the gallery or list it as not for sale. If you do list your piece for sale, fingers crossed that it sells so you can support your wool habit/stash growth.

Important Dates

Wings of Art Rug Hooking Exhibit will be August 9, 2027–September 22, 2027, at The Turner Center for the Arts in Valdosta, GA.
